Chapter 12

Revolution

Alastor called another meeting. Among the present were Susan, whose head was still covered with leaves, the eternally dissatisfied Chief, Lokk, and Leshy, who was lying sprawled on the pelts. And although he looked calm, Third Eye told me that he was nervous. He wasn’t sweating bullets, but being nervous was something Leshy rarely did. I couldn’t blame him, however, the raid had gone terribly wrong. Even if Alastor could turn a blind eye to the number of Werewolves they lost, he couldn’t ignore that they had lost one of the players. The Burgundies came out of the waters with more people than my faction, but the number of players was limited and each person was an irreplaceable cog in this complex machine.

In addition to fear of punishment, Leshy had another reason to be concerned about his position as the military leader and his well being. Half an hour before the meeting, all of Alastor’s deputies met up at Susan’s house to have a rather difficult conversation. Chief was shaking his head for a long time, unsure of if what they were doing was right, but still struck a deal with Leshy in the end.

Shaking with anger, Alastor was staring into space. Sitting in his brand-new chair, he was nervously fiddling with something metal in his hands (the same thing he had been fiddling with when he first met up with Leshy). His face didn’t show anything good: furrowed brows, tightly shut lips, wrinkled forehead... When he finally spoke, his voice sent a chill even down my spine.

“Fucking, would-be players. One was beaten by our own Werewolf and was almost crippled, the other got stuck near the enemy base and can’t move for shit! The third can’t organize the production of bronze weapons, and the fourth screwed up a raid! What am I to do with you, people? If you need some extra motivation, I’ll give it to you!”

He looked around the room, gaze cold as his voice. There was no chance that he’d get rid of his deputies since then he’d have no one to lead the faction. After all, they were still the best of the best… Alastor was eccentric, sure, but he wasn’t a fool. On the other hand, perhaps he could punish one of them publicly as an example for the others, or send them to the mines for a while.

Looking at his deputies, Alastor enjoyed the fact that all of their lives were in his hands. If this wasn’t the highest form of satisfaction, he didn’t know what was.

Susan seemed to shrink, as if she was trying to disappear from view so that she’d never have to hear his terrible voice again. Lokk could barely contain his trembling. He sat staring dead ahead, wondering what Alastor would do to him: hang him or feed him to the monsters in the Uncharted Lands...? Or perhaps something even worse? What if he fed him to the Gray Pilgrim? He shook at the thought. Chief also seemed to be averting his gaze: he had made a mistake, and a serious one at that.
